Alcohol in moderation is something many of us indulge in. The fact is that from a social perspective drinking can be an enjoyable experience, especially in the company of friends and family. However when alcohol is used as a means of escapism or dealing with life’s problems, then alcohol can cause a great deal of harm.

Media stories showing young people being ill in the streets, acting violently and being generally abusive have become commonplace. One of the inherent reasons has been the proliferation of low cost alcoholic beverages that simulate sweet pop style drinks, termed “Alco-pops” which has further fuelled this problem. The term “binge drinking” originates from the process itself, which literally means to have excessive amounts of alcohol over a short period of time. The inherent health problems associated with this form of alcohol abuse can be significant.
