Whether you’re just starting a new job and nervous about making a good impression or you’ve been in the same role for a while now and want to get noticed for promotion, we all want people to think the best of us.
At work things can be competitive or perhaps you feel like just a small cog in a big machine. Either way it can sometimes take a little bit of extra work to make ourselves known. Too often the only people who get noticed at work are those who get known for the wrong reasons like dramatics, gossiping or bullying. Here are my tips to help you get noticed for all the right reasons.
We don’t always think it’s fair but people still judge others by appearances, even if it’s just on a subconscious level. Think about what you’re wearing to work. Is it appropriate? Does it give the message you want it to? A smart business like attire might convey someone who is very organised and conscientious where as something fashionable and offbeat might convey creativity and flair.
Depending on your industry and role, different styles might be appropriate so think about what works for you. It’s important that you feel comfortable as well. Attractive and comfortable new clothes will show in your smile, body language and confidence.
Make Time for People
If you’re sat behind a desk everyday talking to no one it’s very hard to be noticed, no matter how good your work is. Take some time to learn people’s names, have a chat with them in the break room and learn what other people do and what challenges they’re facing. You never know when this information might be useful or when you might be able to help them. Ensure you remember that no one is too high or too low for good manners – from the CEO to the cleaner and everyone in-between.
Be Mindful of Rules & Policies
In any work place there are a number of official and unspoken rules. It’s important to follow all the official rules to stay on the right side of your superiors including security procedures, turning up on time and calling in sick etc.
However, unwritten rules are often the ones that keep you friendly with your colleagues. Things like changing the printer paper if it runs out, not using all the milk or not stealing room bookings. Treating other people well is key to success at work.
Within a busy workplace it’s often the case that many people are doing very similar jobs and doing them well. So what really helps people stand out? One thing which is certainly important is communication. Think through an email before you press send. Be assertive when faced with pressure or bullying but friendly where appropriate.
Learn how to structure an email or conversation clearly and concisely. Work on your emotional intelligence so you can perform better in a team or management role. Effective communication helps you build relationships, persuade others and instigate action.
Practice Active Listening
How many times have you received instructions from a colleague or manager, got back to your desk and realised you can’t remember them? Active listening is an important skill that can be learnt. It helps us receive and clarify information properly as well as making the person we are talking to feel valued. It involves listening closely rather than considering your next response, clarifying our understanding and communicating attentiveness.
