Managing Mood Swings With Hypnotherapy
Mood swings can be caused by a number of things including emotional issues, biological factors, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma or environmental pressures. We all experience ups and downs but some people suffer with drastic and extreme mood changes that are sudden and difficult to deal with. If mood swings are having a severe effect on your health, happiness or everyday life, it may be time to look towards hypnotherapy for a fast, safe and effective treatment.
Explore the Causes
Often mood swings are a symptom of another problem rather than an issue in themselves. Hypnotherapy is very effective at exploring the cause of and triggers for mood swings. If there’s another problem at play such as depression, anxiety or stress, hypnotherapy can be used to treat this. Mood swings can also be the result of emotional turmoil or distress or the inability to process a past traumatic event. Whatever the cause, I can help you address and deal with your mood swings.
Another benefit of hypnotherapy for mood swings is that we can work together to develop coping mechanisms for use in your everyday life. This way you can deal with stressors as they arise, learn how to focus and manage moods and maintain a more healthy emotional balance.
One thing I help my clients with regularly is learning how to regulate their own emotions. Techniques such as positive self-talk can help deal with down days. The more you practise this the more effective it becomes. Other techniques include small rituals or safe spaces which we condition to trigger a positive or calming response.
Anger can be a destructive emotion. Anger is sometimes a natural response, but when it comes on strong and fast we can struggle to control it. Learning to postpone, distract or accept our anger and deal with it in a healthy way is key to anger management. Another effective method is exploring the underlying cause of your anger or finding more positive outlets for frustration.
Learning Not To Feed The Monster
Acknowledging and accepting negative emotions in ourselves is healthy. But whilst some people are efficient at dealing with these through rational thought and behaviour, some of us have previous experiences or behaviour patterns that cause us to feed them. For example, if you are feeling down do you tell yourself you are worthless, wallow in it and feed it with negative thoughts or do you take a moment to feel it but then move on and start to build yourself back up? This is a powerful technique of emotionally rounded people and can be taught in therapy.
Sometimes trying to fight or deny our emotions or moods only makes them more powerful. A mindful approach to mood swings helps us learn to face them and feel them. We tolerate the feeling and acknowledge it, but refuse to feed it. We accept what we can and can’t change about the current situation. We tell ourselves that all things pass, and we use the techniques we have learnt to help us move on.
Mood swings can severely hamper everyday life and may affect our ability to work, form and maintain relationships. We can feel lost and confused by our own emotional responses which leads to damaged confidence and self-worth. With treatment, you can gain control of your life again and enjoy a more balanced emotional response.
